Dementia & Older Adult Care
Maximizing Safety, Preserving Dignity, and Supporting Families
Aging or living with dementia changes how a person interacts with the world, but it shouldn't take away their quality of life. Occupational Therapy empowers older adults and individuals living with dementia to maintain as much of their independence and dignity as possible.
By simplifying activities, adapting homes for safety, and creating specialized daily routines, we help individuals live more fully while providing families with the practical answers they desperately need.
Our Practical Services for Families & Older Adults
🏡 Home Safety & Independence Assessments
Evaluating the individual's level of function in their own home. We look at their ability to safely navigate daily tasks like bathing, dressing, cooking, and mobility, and provide recommendations for home modifications or adaptive equipment.
🧠 Tailored Stimulation Programs
Creating customized, gentle cognitive and physical stimulation activities. These programs keep individuals actively engaged in daily life, promote brain health, reduce anxiety or frustration, and boost overall well-being.
👥 Family Support & Continuous Education
We don't just treat the individual; we support the whole family. We provide ongoing training and education to caregivers on how to handle behavioral changes, simplify communication, and prevent caregiver burnout.
📋 Care Planning & Medical Liaison
Collaborating closely with the client's medical team (doctors, neurologists, geriatrists) to establish exactly how much and what type of care or supervision is required now, and planning ahead for future needs.
When to Seek Help: Signs an Older Adult Needs an OT Assessment
It can be difficult to know when normal aging crosses the line into a safety concern. Consider scheduling an assessment if you notice any of the following:
⚠️ Changes in Memory & Behavior
-
Increased Confusion: Getting lost in familiar places, forgetting routine steps (like how to use the microwave), or misplacing items constantly.
-
Behavioral Changes: Sudden agitation, withdrawal from lifelong hobbies, or changes in personality that make daily tasks difficult to manage.
⚠️ Safety & Physical Red Flags
-
Falls or Near-Misses: Losing balance, struggling to get up from a chair or toilet, or unsteadiness while walking around the house.
-
Neglecting Self-Care: Forgetting to take chronic medications, skipping meals, or struggling with personal hygiene (showering, dressing).
-
Unsafe Stove or Appliance Use: Leaving burners on, forgetting food in the oven, or creating fire hazards in the kitchen.
